What's wrong with the internet?

Somebody’s watching you: Social media and surveillance’ – MM52 p13

50 Word Summary:-

Social media can be considered as a ‘space’ in which people would like some privacy rather than being spied on by social media companies or the government. However,  having our privacy abused may be a small price to pay in order to have the uses and gratifications of the internet.

Critical Autonomy:-

In my opinion, I think that it is fair for social media companies such as Facebook are allowed to invade our privacy to gather information for advertising as with out this, the companies would not be able to make any profit in order to run these particular sites, therefore in due time, we would not be able to have any access to these sites. I also agree with the government needing to use our information as it is very important to protect society from potential terrorist threats and attacks. If you are not doing anything immoral or criminal related, there is no reason to be worried about the government having the ability to see your information as the government would not take interest in every single person's personal life.

The Internet Revolution

1) Communication

With the introduction of the Internet, different websites and applications have continuously been developing in order to make communication easier for everyone. There is no longer a need to make phone calls which would cost money; the availability of websites such as Facebook and Twitter allows free communication with any one around the world.

2) Culture

The Internet has several forms of entertainment and enjoyment which means that people no longer need to leave their homes to find a form of entertainment. This means that people's likes and interests would be centred on the Internet.

3) Nature of Information

Most of the information that is included in books are all compiled into the Internet meaning that the information is more accessible however, the Internet also allows anyone to add information on the Internet meaning that a lot of the information on the Internet has possibilities of being incorrect or inaccurate.

4) Business

There are many methods to buy different items in the Internet. It is easy to purchase items from the comfort of your own home which may mean that many business would have to close down. Especially with websites such as Amazon and eBay allow customers to buy a variety of items which means customers wouldn't need to visit several different stores to buy different items.

5) Privacy

The Internet makes many people's personal information visible to many different people as well as the government. Also some sites keep track of the websites that you visit in order to sell Internet users products that they are interested in.

6) Online Safety

Due to the lack of privacy, it can be very unsafe for some of the younger Internet users who are naive of the dangers of the Internet. Also, there aren't many restrictions for adult content meaning young users may see some content they should not be seeing.

7) Community

The Internet allows people to come together and discuss they're likes and interests with other people who live far.

8) Copyright

the Internet allows users to illegally download music and movies through streaming sites and converters. Due to the nature of the site, it has become hard for the Internet to prevent plagiarism due to the accessibility of work.
