NDM News Story 32: Sky broadband to bring in 'default on' setting to block adult content

From 2016, Sky will automatically block porn and other adult content for all new customers and will not show such content util after 9pm. However, this setting can be changed and personalized to unblock adult content for over eighteen year olds. Sky plan to send an email to all new Sky customers, asking whether they want this new filter and unless they reply otherwise, the filter will automatically be applied for the new customers. This change has had some negative responses, stating that by Sky doing this, they are stripping customers of their online freedom as well as not informing the customers properly of their new filter.

  • by June this year Sky customers were the most active when it came to using content filters, with more than 30% leaving content filters switched on
  • none of its rivals – BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk – had reached 15%.
  • 62% of the customers it had sent the “unavoidable decision” email had kept some form of parental control turned on.
In my opinion, I feel that this is a good choice made by Sky as many of the youth are being dumbed down by the excess of pornographic materials that are so easily accessible for them. It will give young people more of an opportunity to use their time more productively. I do not agree with the fact that customers are being stripped of their online freedom as they are easily able to inform Sky that they do not want the new filter.
